| For over 25 years, the USA vs. Japan
Collegiate Golf Championship has showcased elite college golfers
representing their respective countries in international competition.
The inaugural matches took place in 1975 with Masahiro Kuramoto
and Curtis Strange squaring off as the Americans defeated the Japanese,
26-14.
Former U.S. players include Brad Faxon, Juli Inkster, Davis Love
III, Steve Stricker, Bob Tway, Scott Verplank and many other tour
players.
The 2000 edition of the championship witnessed reigning U.S. Amateur
Champion, Jeff Quinney, lead the Americans to a 41-19 victory.
Quinney, earning MVP honors, posted a score of 206 (-10) in 54-holes
at the SCGA Members Club at Rancho Murietta, California.
The 2000 championship was the first time the event was contested
in the United States since 1987, when the teams competed at Pebble
Beach.
The 2001 USA vs. Japan Collegiate Golf Championship returned to
Japan and Verde Sano Country Club. Located in Sano, Tochigi (approximately
60 miles north of Tokyo), Verde Sano also played host to the 1998
and 1999 championship. The Americans soundly defeated the Japanese
37-23 in the 26th Championship, July 3-5, 2001.
